Website update.

I’ve been meaning to update the look of my site for a while now and I’ve finally found a theme that is both pleasant to look at and isn’t too different from the old one. So, may I present: The new Tardis Remakes website. Tadahh! 🙂

For a while (don’t know how long though) I’ve had a problem with the site that meant not everyone could access it (not related to the change of theme). The problem is solved now and the site will no longer block visitors. I think it was a plugin I used, that banned certain IP adresses from posting, which I used to keep the worst spammers out, but unfortunately it seems it kept innocent people out too. Oops.

That means that for the past month I’ve been getting a lot more spam than I’m used to (which Akismet does catch…but still) so now I’ve changed it so you have to sign up if you want to post a comment. Annoying, yes, but perhaps I will keep some of the spammers out and that would make me a happier person.

Death to all spammers!..may you all die violent and painfully!

On a more positive note I’m happy to say that work is progressing nicely on Neon Invasion Earth. Funny how ones plans can get all out of whack all of a sudden. This was just a little fun throaway idea that was supposed to be finished in two weeks, but now it’s been 4½ months. *sigh*

…it should be finished before the end of this year though. 😉

New Game: Binary Land

Another day, another new project. 🙂

I needed a short break from my Invaders game so I decided to throw myself into GLBasic and remake a game for a compo over at that site, and that’s what I’ve been working on for at last couple of weeks. Info on that compo is here. There’s no prizes in the compo though, but in this case it’ll be my first game 2010 and that’s reward enough for me. :).

Before reading any further, or starting to look for a download link, you should know that at the time of writing, this game is “only” 99% finished and should be done very very soon (depends a little on the music-guy), so there’s actually nothing to download yet. However, the competition ends on October 31st so the game should be out before then.

The theme of the compo is to remake a NES or a SNES game. My choice is Binary Land – a NES game from 1985.

In this game you play a penguin. Actually you play two penguins – at the same time, no less. All the levels are split in two, and at the beginning of a level you start off with a penguin on each side of the screen. They can move freely from one half to the other though. Ultimately the objective is to guide both penguins to the top of the screen and have them meet up at the heart-cage, but the game has a very interresting play-mechanic where only one of the penguins are controlled “directly” – the other penguins left/right movement is reversed, and combined with the mazes not being symetrical, this gives the game a bit of a puzzle twist and of course you also have to deal with enemies and powerups on top of trying to guide your penguins safely to the exit.

I wrote a port mortem on the game here if you’d like to read more about the development of the game.

Here’s a couple of screenshots. First the splashscreen, the one “normal” screenshot and one with scanlines, which is one of the options.

This is the titlescreen/splashscreen.

A screenshot without scanlines.

Out very soon. 🙂

Progress on current project.

Yes. Funny how things happen sometimes. I mentioned a while back that “my next game would be Black Widow” and then I suddenly had the idea for the Invaders game. That was actually just supposed to be a small game and should’ve been finished by now, but…

The game was almost done…but there was something missing – it’s was too…simple.

So a couple of betatesters were drafted and asked for feedback and boy – did I get a lot.

So the game has changed quite a lot now. Visually it’s still pretty much the same, but I work on it almost every day and it’s getting better and better. It now has custom waveformations, introduction levels, challenges and things like that, so it’s worth the extra development time as it’s becoming a better game…and that’s really what it’s all about.

Here’s a newer picture. It’s a couple of weeks old, but it looks better than the previous picture. 🙂

Lots of things flying around in this picture. Note: the yellow triangles are no longer yellow triangles, but spiffy shield-looking powerups.

Another WIP: Space Invaders…sorta.

After a short while away on vacation I noticed a Google search for ‘space invaders game tardis shooting‘ so I guess someone has tried searching for a game I’m working on, but not yet posted about here (although I have posted on Retro Remakes about it).

I haven’t decided on a final name yet, so I’m temporarily calling it ‘Tempestuous Spherical Invaders‘, but that will most likely change.

This is what I call ‘a quickie’. I started it a few weeks ago because it seemed like it would be a fun little project, and I’m keeping it a small project so I don’t expect it to take more than a few weeks before it’s finished (but I know I keep saying that about every game I’m working on ;)).

It’s basically Space Invaders – but played on a sphere. You move your base around the Earth and shoot at the approaching Invaders. To make it a bit more fun I’m adding a bunch of power-ups like different cannons, beam-weapons, shields and stuff like that, but I’m keeping this project small so I can get back to Black Widow again.

If you want to read more, go here.

Meanwhile, here’s a few pictures to look at;

Work in progress. Notice the new 4th invader. It's a cat. We love cats. 🙂

The beam-weapon in effect. Also, you have a shield too. Also shown - the readout showing you how much longer you have your powerup.
