“Speccies 2”? … that’s not new, right? Well, both yes and no.
The other day I was listening to Simon Butler’s (Dinosaur Pie) podcast and he said he was working on graphics for a Sega Genesis game … and I thought “Didn’t *I* work on something for the Sega Master System once?” Well, the question was rhetorical, because I remembered that I’d done so, but I had no idea what happened to it. I certainly hadn’t posted about it here.
I had a look on my harddrive and I found it. A bit of backstory first: back in 2013 I coded a small 16K game called “Speccies 2” for the ZX Spectrum. Then in 2015 I coded a version of the same game for the Taito L System arcade platform. It seemed like a nice and small project to learn about a new platform.
And that was something I did again in 2018. A friend inspired me to try to code something for the Sega Master System and I decided to make the same game again for that console too. I found its source code and a version called “Final” from 2018, but had then added music and sfx in 2020 and entered it into a coding competition. I wonder what happened to that, LOL 🤷♂️
So here it is, exactly as I entered it into that competition 5 years ago. Gameplay wise it’s done, but as the readme file says “The music and few sounds are grabbed from various random places and it could use some better music and more sound effects” … but it is what it is – I don’t intend to work more on it again … unless someone comes forward and offers to help out.
Enjoy this 5 year old game. Click here for more information and the link to download it.
